How Publisher Recommendations for Advertisers Works

Introduction

This information applies to all publishers who interact with advertisers in all networks, except Japan.

Rakuten’s data science team has developed a Matchmaking Model that is used to recommend publishers to our advertisers. The recommendations are based on an algorithm that considers sales and performance data from similar publishers and similar advertisers. Recommendations appear in a variety of locations in the Advertiser Dashboard. In order for you to best position yourself and your site to be included in recommendations to appropriate advertisers, it is important for you to complete your profile in your Publisher Dashboard.

Publisher Recommendations for Advertisers

Rakuten’s data science team has developed a Matchmaking Model that is used to recommend publishers to our advertisers. Those recommendations surface in a variety of locations in the Advertiser Dashboard.

Below is an example from the “Find New” page:

How Are Recommendations Determined?

These recommendations are generated on an advertiser-by-advertiser basis. The algorithm looks at these factors:

  • Who are the top publishers for that advertiser based on clicks, sales, and AOV?
  • Which advertisers in our network are similar to this advertiser?
  • Within that group of similar advertisers, which publishers are they working with who are similar to the top publishers for this advertiser?

You can think of it this way:  If a publisher is having success with the advertiser’s peers, they will probably do good things with that advertiser.

What Do You Need to Do?

  • Optimize Your Publisher Profile

When you are recommended to an advertiser, the information that we present will be straight from your profile data. If your profile is incomplete, outdated, or poorly written, you might be missing an opportunity.

To help with this, Rakuten occasionally fills in missing profile data using data found on publishers’ websites or other using other online sources. For example, if your account does not include a “Short Description" we might pull the meta description from your home page.

  • Understand the Option to “Dismiss” Publishers from Recommendations

One thing to be aware of is that advertisers have the option to “dismiss” a recommendation. A dismissed publisher will no longer be recommended to that particular advertiser, but the dismissal does not have any bearing on the ability to do business together in our network down the road.
